EBRI Fast Fact — Self-Insurance Increasing in Small and Medium-Sized Businesses and Decreasing in Large Companies

Since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), there has been speculation that an increasing number of small and medium-sized employers would convert their health plans from fully insured to self-insured plans. As well, a recent EBRI report found that the percentage of private-sector establishments offering self-insured health plans increased through 2016 but has since ebbed and flowed with no discernible long-term trend. This Fast Fact takes a look at these recent trends, which have been more clearly defined when examined by firm size.




EBRI Fast Fact — How Financial Factors Outside of a 401(k) Plan Can Impact Retirement Readiness

In a joint effort, EBRI and J.P. Morgan Asset Management conducted a research study to better understand how the financial factors faced by 401(k) plan participants outside of their 401(k) plan impact their retirement preparations. This EBRI Fast Fact compares plan participants who experience spending spikes with those who do not across credit card utilization, 401(k) plan contributions, and 401(k) plan loan use.
